Grounding (or “earthing”) might sound like a trendy wellness buzzword, but for me, it has become a quiet, steady part of my routine. For over a year now, I’ve made it a habit to go outside and stand barefoot on the earth. Grass, dirt, sand (whatever God provides that day). And yes, I’ve stepped on Legos out there too. Offer it up.

The idea is simple. Reconnect physically with the ground God made. Science shows grounding can reduce inflammation, improve sleep, balance hormones, and calm the nervous system. But as a Catholic husband and father, I’ve found that it does something deeper. It reminds me that I am dust and to dust I shall return.

This is not New Age stuff. There is nothing un-Catholic about standing on the ground and thanking God for His creation. Genesis tells us that God formed man from the dust of the ground. Christ Himself walked barefoot on this earth. And Saint Francis practically wrote a spiritual masterpiece about brother sun and sister moon. This is rooted in gratitude, humility, and awe.

In the summer, I usually ground in our backyard when the weather permits. Sometimes I’ll do it on the beach while the kids play if we’re near the shore. It is peaceful, warm, and full of life. In the fall and winter, I switch to a grounding mat indoors. It’s not quite the same as standing in the grass, but it still brings a sense of calm and connection. The point is consistency. A few minutes of silence, prayer, and presence can go a long way.

Sometimes I pray a decade of the Rosary. Other times I just thank God for another day. I ask for peace, clarity, or just a stronger back to carry whatever the day brings. It is my moment to reset. To disconnect from noise and connect to grace.

If you’re curious, start small. Go outside with your morning coffee. Kick off your shoes. Say a quick prayer. Feel the coolness of the ground beneath you and thank God for the gift of your body, your breath, your life.
