Sunday Is Sacred: How We Protect Family Time

In our home, Sundays are different. They have to be. The rest of the week is full of activity, movement, noise, sports, work, school, and everything in between. But Sunday…

In our home, Sundays are different. They have to be. The rest of the week is full of activity, movement, noise, sports, work, school, and everything in between. But Sunday is our reset. It is the one day we stop the spin and let the Lord lead.

We begin with Mass. As a family. All of us. We take up the entire pew. It is not always quiet and it is not always smooth, but it is always worth it. Our kids know this is non-negotiable. Sunday Mass is the center of our week. We show up together, even when it is hard, because the Eucharist is the source and summit of our life.

After Mass, we make it a point to stay together. We share a meal. We play board games or go outside. The older kids know that Sunday is family day. They are expected to be home. No sports, no practices, no plans that pull us apart.

We do not treat Sunday like just another weekend day. We do not use it to catch up on errands or chores. We do not overbook it. We protect it. Because it is not just a day off. It is the Lord’s Day. It is a time for worship, rest, and renewal.

The Church teaches us to “sanctify Sundays and holy days of obligation by participating in the Mass” and to rest “from those works and activities which hinder the worship due to God” (CCC 2185). That is not a burden. It is a gift. A commandment that heals.

We have found that when we honor Sunday, the rest of the week flows better. We feel more connected. Our kids learn that family comes before the world’s busyness. They see that rest is not laziness. It is strength. It is a holy rhythm.

If you are trying to reclaim your Sundays, start simple. Make Mass the anchor. Plan a family meal. Say no to one extra thing that usually clutters the day. Invite peace in. Let Sunday be a taste of heaven — not just for you, but for your children too.

Because how we live Sunday teaches our family what we really value. And we want them to know, without a doubt, that God comes first.
